Ostara, Eostre, Easter, Vernal Equinox, Spring Equinox, and First Day of Spring are all names for the same festival time. This is the day when the light and darkness are of equal length, and afterwards the days get longer. This is the time when the light symbolically “triumphs over darkness”, and it has long been the time for gods to return from the Underworld, or the darkness.
The various different spellings of her name reflect regional pronunciations. Ostara was venerated throughout Germanic lands. She is the spirit of resurrection, Lady of Spring, and the return of life and fertility after winter’s darkness. Ostara takes its name after the Germanic goddess, Eostre, who was traditionally honoured with festivals to celebrate fertility, renewal and re-birth. It was from Eostre that the Christian celebration of Easter evolved, and indeed the naming of the hormone Eostrogen, essential to women's fertility.
The Celtic goddess of Spring was celebrated in festivities and dancing around and through the birch tree between the Spring Equinox and Beltane. Birch twigs were traditionally used to make besoms (a new broom sweeps clean). It signifies a new start, beginnings and birth.
